FOOD RESCUE
It’s been a huge year for food rescue, which saw our team of 122 drivers classified as emergency workers as demand continued to grow. During the height of lockdown, many charities closed their doors, with our logistics teams adapting daily as a result.
We’re working hard with our network of food donors to improve the quality and quantity of rescued food, helping them to reach zero waste to landfill goals. We’ve expanded our reach by adding new food rescue hubs in Toowoomba, Townsville, Central Coast and Wollongong and for the first time, we were able to get food to all the charities on our waiting list.

The resilience of the charities we support has really shone through. Many doing double the work, with half the volunteers – but always with a smile on their face, especially when OzHarvest food arrives.

FOOD RELIEF
So many new people needed our help this year and food rescue alone was not enough. For the first time ever, we needed to buy food as part of our emergency food relief response and thanks to government funding and generous supporters we responded quickly and scaled up our operations to meet the need where greatest.
Food hampers went from 2,000 to 12,000 a week, as we collaborated with local councils, police and the Australian Defence Force, along with our own hamper hubs to meet demand. Our chefs and hospitality partners produced cooked meals and mobile markets helped get fresh produce to regional and remote communities during these challenging times.

I see families who don’t want to come forward and ask for help, even though they are struggling to put food on the table. The boxes we make with OzHarvest food create a spark; you can see on their faces what it means to get good food.

COOKING
FOR A CAUSE
Throughout the year and in many locations, we have been unable to host our usual Cooking for a Cause sessions. In the absence of corporate teams, OzHarvest chefs and many hospitality partners have worked tirelessly to produce thousands of nourishing cooked meals every week as part of our food relief response. When we have been able to welcome teams into our kitchens, the energy and enthusiasm has been overwhelming and our chefs loved every minute of it as they seamlessly demonstrate how to transform rescued ingredients into gourmet meals.

We thoroughly enjoyed working as a team and all the kitchen banter! Everyone left having learnt something new about food waste and our group chat the next day was an array of thank you’s!
